In the Service of the King (Vampire Warrior Kings, #1)

In the Service of the King (Vampire Warrior Kings #1)

Kael, Warrior King of the Vampires, loathes the Night of the Proffering. He needs the blood of either his mate or a human virgin to maintain his strength, but hasn't enjoyed the ritual since he lost his mate centuries ago. Kael doesn't want a new companion, yet his resolve is tested when he lays eyes on his new offering, Shayla McKinnon. He is drawn to Shayla's beauty and poise...and the submission she offers. She is eager to give him anything he wishes, including her innocence, to please him. Will Kael give in to their overwhelming desire—even if it means risking Shayla's life?

In this short book, nine chapters to be exact, Laura Kaye has done it once again.  She has captured my heart and my imagination, leaving me breathless and in love with vampires. (Like I wasn't already before!) She has managed to take vampires to a whole other level and give her own unique take on their lives. Without making them overly sweet and keeping their lure of danger intact.

Shayla is a college student who has been tormented by the death of her sister. Her sister was killed by  the "Soul Eaters".  A dangerous and deadly clan of vampires who don't follow any rules. Since then she has vowed vengeance is any way she can. Her parents, being part of an elite council of humans who are in on the vampire's secrets, pave the way for her to be trained as a "proffered".  The Proffered's are human girls who have reached their 20th year and are still virgins.  They are trained to serve the vampire king Kael for one night. For the blood of a virgin is very potent.

Kael is the answer to her prayers. She invasions fighting the Soul Eaters side by side with him, extracting vengeance, and loving him for all time.  But are they just girlish dreams? Kael has refused to take a mate for years and usually send the proffered  away after their one night with him. Can she win his heart?

Laura Kaye spins her take of the vampire world into a very believable and sensual tale.  With her trademark understated and sweet erotic scenes, and her amazing story telling, this story ends all too soon. And leaves you wanting more. One of my favorite characters is Liam, the second in command to Kael, and for all purposes his brother. Liam adds a sense of humor and turns out to be an unlikely ally to Shayla.  I would love to see more of Liam in future installments.

Shayla is a strong heroine who knows what she wants. We see her in both submissive and strong roles and she is believable in both.  All in all I can not say one thing negative about this book. I loved it! It served to further cement Laura Kaye as one of my new favorite authors. Especially when you are looking for a great escape into the world of romance.

Laura Kaye is a bestselling and award-winning author of paranormal, contemporary and erotic romance. Laura's hot, heartfelt stories are all about the universal desire for a place to belong. Laura grew up amidst family lore involving angels, ghosts, and evil-eye curses, cementing her life-long fascination with the supernatural. Though an avid fiction writer as a teenager, a career as a historian took her in other directions until recently. Now that Laura's inner muse has awakened, she's constantly creating new story ideas! Laura lives in Maryland with her husband, two daughters, and cute-but-bad dog, and appreciates her view of the Chesapeake Bay every day.
