Book Review: Her Forbidden Hero

Her Forbidden Hero

She's always been off-limits...

Former Army Special Forces Sgt. Marco Vieri has never thought of Alyssa Scott as more than his best friend's little sister, but her return home changes that...and challenges him to keep his war-borne demons at bay. Marco's not the same person he was back when he protected Alyssa from her abusive father, and he's not about to let her see the mess he's become.

...but now she's all grown up.

When Alyssa takes a job at the bar where Marco works, her carefree smiles wreak havoc on his resolve to bury his feelings. How can he protect her when he can't stop thinking about her in his bed? But Alyssa's not looking for protection—not anymore. Now that she's back in his life, she’s determined to heal her forbidden hero, one touch at a time.

The first book I read by Laura Kaye was Hearts in Darkness. I thought at that time she could not create a better tortured hero than Caden. She had me hooked, and I have since read everything she has written. But the past day and a half I learned that she could in fact top Caden, and that his name is Marco.

Laura gets a lot right in this book. As the daughter of a wounded combat veteran and the wife of a former National Guardsman, I found the descriptions of Marco's struggles with PTSD and depression right on the money. She got the gist of the strain of military service down with out overcrowding us with imagery. Her sparse descriptions of his nightmares and his recollections were just enough to get the point across without being preachy and shocking. His inner dialog and struggles with facing a new uncertain future made his character real. Her heroes being flawed and emotionally torn is a theme Laura comes back to again and again, but the formula works. It makes them real and accessible. To me this book was about Marco.

Allyson as the female lead is similar. She has lived through her own turmoil and instead of hiding behind her past she pushes through. Her strength, coupled with her nativity, makes her believable. She is struggling to make her way alone in this world. And we can't help but wonder if finding Marco after all these years will derail her, or steady her. Allyson is not your typical damsel in distress. She has the strength to walk away from Marco, to question what she feels, and to not go blindly into her desires. Yet that stubbornness almost costs her the one person who has always had her back.

Is it possible for two people with painful pasts and hidden demons to love? Is it possible to fall in love with someone who watched over you and helped you grow up? Is it even right? In her trademark fashion of a smooth and quick read, (yet she never oversimplifies) Laura Kaye has once again given us a believable and sensual tale of love and redemption. With a up to the minuet story line. Weather writing contemporary romance, paranormal romance or erotic tales, Laura always give a solid story and a tantalizing look at love. The only complaint I have is that it ended too quick. I felt the last chapter a little rushed. It was all tied up way too nicely. I also would have liked a little more about Brady. But I have a feeling he will appear again.

You will not be disappointed with this book. Any fan of Laura's needs it on their bookshelf or in their Kindle.  I gave it five stars on Goodreads for it's understated power of making you feel for the characters.  And for the fact I had a hard time putting it down once I started. I don't like to search to feel a connection, I felt the pull of the characters from the first page. A book should entertain you and make you want to read. This one did just that.

Laura Kaye's next book, West of Want, Book Two of the Hearts of The Anemoi , will be available in July.
She is the  bestselling and award-winning author of paranormal, contemporary and erotic romance. Laura's hot, heartfelt stories are all about the universal desire for a place to belong. Laura grew up amidst family lore involving angels, ghosts, and evil-eye curses, cementing her life-long fascination with the supernatural. Though an avid fiction writer as a teenager, a career as a historian took her in other directions until recently. Now that Laura's inner muse has awakened, she's constantly creating new story ideas! Laura lives in Maryland with her husband, two daughters, and cute-but-bad dog, and appreciates her view of the Chesapeake Bay every day.
