American exchange student Kate Bordessa has fled to Russia to escape her family's hopes that she'll become one of the Proffered, human women who feed and mate with elite vampire warriors. But when she stumbles upon a wounded vampire in the streets of Moscow, she's instinctively driven to protect him--and feels an undeniable spark of desire.
Grieving over the deaths of his brothers, Vampire Warrior King Nikolai Vasilyev has thrown himself into battling his enemies, focused only on vengeance. Until the attack that brought him to Kate. Their sexual attraction explodes into a night of uncontrolled passion--a night that marks them as mates. Is their connection strong enough to convince them to embrace a destiny neither of them was expecting?
In this second novella in the Vampire Warrior's series Laura Kaye jumps right into the life of her tortured vampire hero. The sexual attraction between Kate and Nikolai is evident right from the start. You can see that she is destined to be his mate, and her trying to go halfway around the world to escape her destiny was futile. While you could easily read this book as a stand alone, I was happy I had read In the Service of the King and had the understanding of the back story. (Dealing with the proffered and the vampire fractions. )
The secondary characters were not as engaging to me as they were in the first book. And I found Kate a little to blindly accepting of her situation. But all in all this is a wonderful guilty pleasure read into the world of my favorite mythical creatures. How can you miss when you combine erotic romance and vampires? I mean it's a winning combination for a summer read. I am eagerly looking forward to the next installment in the series. As always I love the characters Laura creates, and it showcases just how versatile her writing is. I always feel satisfied after reading a Laura Kaye book.
