Book Review: South of Surrender

She's the only one who can see through his golden boy fa├žade to the broken god within...

Chrysander Notos, Supreme God of the South Wind and Summer, is on a mission: save Eurus from his death sentence, and prove his troubled brother can be redeemed. But Eurus fights back, triggering vicious summer storms that threaten the mortal realm, dangerously drain Chrys, and earn the ire of the Olympic gods who ordered Eurus dead.

Laney Summerlyn refuses to give up her grandfather's horse farm, despite her deteriorating vision. More than ever, she needs the organized routine of her life at Summerlyn Stables, until a ferocious storm brings an impossible—and beautiful—creature crashing down from the heavens.

Injured while fighting Eurus, Chrys finds himself at the mercy of a mortal woman whose compassion and acceptance he can't resist. As they surrender to the passion flaring between them, immortal enemies close in, forcing Chrys to choose between his brother and the only woman who's ever loved the real him.

This is the third book in the Hearts of the Anemoi series. A fantastic series where Laura Kaye blends greek mythology and her own take on the supreme gods of the winds. While this book is number three in the series, you certainly could pick it up and enjoy it as a stand alone. (But if you did that you would be missing out on two other fantastic books!)

To me Chrys is the most mortal of the gods we have met so far. His struggles and his demons are inherently human, and that just adds to the believability of the story. Pairing him with a strong willed woman, in the form of the almost blind Laney Summerlyn, enabled Kaye to bring out his vulnerabilities and his internal struggles in a real way.

Their give and take, and shared struggles, makes for an almost perfect romantic pair. The kind of couples that Kaye consistently brings us in all her books. We root for them, we yell at them, and we want nothing more than for them to find their happy ending. Her couples always need each other in the most intimate of ways, cementing us in their struggle and their worlds.

The drama and story flows nicely, everything builds up to a climatic finish that will have fans of the series waiting eagerly for the next installment. I really don't want to give away any spoilers, but I was floored at the loss of a main character who was one of my favorites. And very satisfied with how this installment wrapped up. I also can't wait to read more about a new character that was introduced.

So yes, this book goes down as a keeper and a repeat reader. And just cements in my mind why Laura Kaye is one of my favorite authors. No matter if she is writing paranormal, mythological or contemporary, she is the queen of romance.

I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review of this book.

Laura Kaye is the New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author of a dozen books in contemporary and paranormal romance. Laura grew up amidst family lore involving angels, ghosts, and evil-eye curses, cementing her life-long fascination with storytelling and the supernatural. Laura lives in Maryland with her husband, two daughters, and cute-but-bad dog, and appreciates her view of the Chesapeake Bay every day.
